First known as Santiago de la Vega (St. James of the Plain), Spanish Town was founded by the Spaniards about 1534 after they abandoned their first city at Sevilla Nueva on the north coast. The British destroyed much of the original town in 1655, but remained to build new structures, many of them fine examples of Georgian architecture.
